Did You Know?
Phosphorus is a nutrient found in most lawn fertilizers. It is needed only during the establishment of a new lawn to help with root development. Most of the soils in our area have plenty of phosphorus to maintain a healthy lawn so any phosphorus that is applied to a lawn is in excess of what is needed. When it rains the excess will wash off the lawn, into the streets, down the storm drains that drain directly into local streams and lakes. Once it is in these waterways it causes algal blooms that decrease oxygen that is needed for fish and other aquatic life.
What Can You Do?
The next time your lawn is scheduled to be fertilized ask your lawn care professional if they provide phosphorous free fertilizer. Below are some local lawn care professionals that have partnered with the City of Pleasant Hill to offer phosphorous free fertilizer.
Do-It-Yourselfer?
If you fertilize your own lawn and want to know what to look for in fertilizer, just remember that the middle number is key. Fertilizer bags will have three numbers showing the nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K). The middle number will be zero in order for the fertilizer to be phosphorous free.
