What can you do as a developer or homebuilder?
|
|
| Stabilize entrance |
It is always important to stabilize the construction site entrance no matter what the size of the project is. With all the traffic coming and going on the site, equipment is likely to track soil along roadways. By stabilizing the entrance you ensure minimal tracking issues and avoid complaints from neighbors and other travelers.
|
 |
| Temporary stabilization |
Is an important way help stabilize your site to avoid erosion problems. If you know that a portion of your construction site will be inactive for more than 21 days, then its best if you temp seed the area until construction activity returns. The more established the site is the less likely you will need other sediment controls, thus cutting down on your costs. |
 |
| Silt fence |
This is the most common BMP for construction sites. Silt fence can help stop sediment from leaving your construction site. But silt fence should be inspected and repaired when damaged to avoid structural failure. Silt fence can also be ineffective in certain areas, like areas with steep slopes. Areas with steep slopes should use silt fence along the contours of the slope and use an erosion control, temp seeding or geotextile, along the slope. |
 |
| Sediment Traps |
Sediment traps are used when the construction site is closely located by a stormwater intake. These sediment traps do what they say, by trapping the sediment before it goes down the storm drain and enters the creeks and streams. Sediment traps need to be checked and cleaned often. |
 |
| Geotextiles |
Geotextiles are porous fabric that helps stabilize steeper slopes and banks. They must be securely anchored to the ground to avoid it from blowing away. Geotextiles aid in plant growth by providing a secure surface for soil and seeds. Like mentioned above geotextiles can be coupled with a sediment control, like silt fence, to give added erosion and sediment protection to your construction site. |
 |
The most important thing for every builder and developer to remember
is that stabilization is key in managing your construction site. Its
best to stabilize every portion of the construction site that
is not actively being worked on, so that way when major rain
events happen you are prepared and will not have to worry about
what the site will look like the next day. This may not
keep you from adding some additional sediment controls, silt
fence, sediment traps, etc., but it will lessen the amount of
work that the sediment controls will have. |
